ABSECON HAS A RICH HISTORIC PAST DATING BACK TO 1716
Existing historic landmarks like the Pitney House, Absecon Inn, United Methodist Church, Absecon Presbyterian Church, Odd Fellows Hall and Absecon’s Historical Society Museum are just a few located in the center of town. King’s Highway (Shore Road) was built in 1716. The road to Robert Dougthy’s Mill (New Jersey Avenue) was built in 1800. The road to Samuel Cooper’s Ferry (Church Street) was built in 1821. Pitney Road was built 1833 by Dr. Pitney to reduce travel time to make house calls in Port Republic. Station Avenue and the Camden Atlantic Railroad was built in 1854. Absecon Boulevard was built in 1927.

The State of New Jersey Historic Preservation Office in 1996 designated a sizeable portion of Absecon as a Historic District.  The South Shore Road Historic District (ID# 2935) includes properties along South Shore Road from Nevada Avenue to Ohio Avenue, including a portion of the south side of Ohio Avenue and Illinois Avenue. The North Shore Road Historic District (ID# 3570) includes properties along North Shore Road starting from 22 North Shore Road to just south of the Galloway Township boundary line. Portions of Church Street, Faunce Landing Road and Sooy Lane are included in this District.  The Historic Building Survey includes approximately 78 buildings in the North Shore Road Historic District and approximately 89 buildings are included in the South Shore Road Historic District. A total of 167 buildings are included in the inventory.
 
The Absecon Planning Board and the Absecon Historical Society and Museum recognizes the New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office designated portions of Absecon as a Historic Districts as described above. The Absecon Historical Society is enthusiastic about promoting cultural tourism in Absecon. The Society promotes “historical walking tours” which has been very popular. Other walking tours are planned. Also, historical lectures / presentations are planned in the Absecon Historical Society Museum Tour of Historic Sites in Absecon” and an “Old-Timers” interview video to help promote “Historic Absecon”.

This is the first Absecon Blue Devil Football Banquet in 1957.  Leo Howlett was the 1st President and he is seated at the table behind the NJ in the sign in the light colored jacket. Le0 Howlett, Tony Galupo, Dick Hudson and Steve Rice were the original founders of the Absecon Blue Devil  organization.

Welcome to the Absecon Historical Society Website
The ABSECON HISTORICAL SOCIETY is a Non-Profit organization independently managed by its Officers and Board of Directors.
The Society preserves and maintains artifacts, documents, photographs, maps and memorabilia relating to the establishment, growth and development of the Absecon in the Howlett Hall Museum located at 100 New Jersey Avenue. The Howlett Hall Museum is the site for the dissemination and display of this knowledge and material.
The Society continues to disseminate historical information and arouse interest in the past by publishing material, by holding public meetings and discussion, by marking historical buildings and/or sites, by making presentations that will educate and inform the public, and by using the various forms of media to awaken public interest.
The Society promotes the preservation of historic buildings, monuments, and markers.
The Society provides for the preservation of such material and for its accessibility, as far as may be feasible, for all who wish to examine or study it.
The Society collects any materials which may help to establish or illustrate the history, culture, heritage and traditions of Absecon along with its role in Atlantic County and the South Jersey area in general. It will collect printed material, manuscript materials, museum materials, and objects illustrative of life, conditions, events, people and activities of the past and present.
The Society brings together those people interested in the history of Absecon, New Jersey.
